Manganese is one of the important alloying agents. It is made to form an alloy to improve the strength, toughness, stiffness, hardness, wear resistance, and hardening ability of steels. In combination with aluminum and antimony, especially in the presence of copper, it forms highly ferromagnetic alloys. Manganese dioxide acts as a depolarizer in dry cells and as a decolorizing agent for glass that becomes colored green due to iron impurities. The dioxide also comes into utilization for drying black paints and in the preparation of oxygen and chlorine. Manganese colors glass an amethyst color and it acts as a coloring agent in natural amethyst. The permanganate finds its usage as an oxidizing agent and is helpful in performing qualitative analysis and as a component in medicines. Manganese also works as an important trace element in nutrition, but sometimes exposure to the element is toxic in higher quantities.
