The most recycled material in the world today is Ferrous scrap by which over 50% of the world's steel is produced. Scrap is utilized on a large scale for the production of raw steel. The physical property of crystalline silicon includes Black-greyish color, while the Amorphous form of silicon is a dark brown powder. Silicon metal makes up 25% of the earth's crust and is the second most abundant element, following oxygen. Silicon is not found in free form in nature, but is capable of forming more compounds than any other element, except carbon. It is a very useful to semi conducting elements. Silicon and its compounds possess some of the most useful mechanical, thermal, optical, and electrical properties, which are utilized by mankind.
It finds its application in manufacture of special steels and cast iron, aluminum alloys, glass and refractory materials, ceramics, abrasives, water filtration, component of hydraulic cements, filler in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, paper, insecticides, rubber reinforcing agent - especially for high adhesion to textiles, anti-caking agent in foods, flatting agent in paints, thermal insulator. The fused silica form of silicon is utilized as an ablative material in rocket engines, spacecraft. Another important product of silicon, silica fibres are used in reinforced plastics.
